Please explain barrel terms

How do you know if your horse is 1D, 2D, etc? What does that mean?

If you are running at a barrel race they are typically called "4D" races, at least around here. There can be some that are simply "3D" or as much as "5 or 6D"

Lets use 4D as our example.

Say you go and make your run and you run a 16.325

Now the fastest time was a 15.258, so that person would win the "1D" division and set the pace for how the other divisions are paid.

Example:
1D Division
1st place: 15.258
(from there the next fastest time would be in the 2nd place slot)
2nd place: 15.266
3rd place: 15.344

2D Division (add .5 seconds to the fastest time and that will be the winner of the 2d)
1st place: 15.758
2nd place: 15.766
3rd place: 15.844

3D Division(add 1 second to the fastest time)
1st place: 16.258
2nd place: 16.325 (your hypothetical time)
3rd place: 16.447

4D Division (add 2 seconds to the fastest time)
1st place: 17.258
2nd place: 17.336
3rd place: 17.587

****Some places choose to run the 4d with whats called a "half second split" vs a "whole second split" and this just simply means that instead of adding a full two seconds to determine the 4d times you would add 1.5 seconds****

some groups will place down quite a few slots depending on the amount of runners.

Hope this helped somewhat :)
