Stretching his jaw?
My horse has started doing this "jaw stretching" sort of movement, and I'm not completely sure why..
here's a description of this jaw stretching-
He opens his mouth, tenses up his jaw, and sort of bobs his head forwards, then sort of jerks his head back and repeats.
He does this when I'm riding as well, but up until recently i thought it was his way of playing with the bit, but now that he started doing it without the bit , I'm sort of confused
Does anyone know why he might be doing? is it just a stress thing?
He gets his teeth done every 6 months. He had them last done at the beginning of January
What kind of bit are you riding in?
My horse does this when I'm riding in anything with direct contact like a snaffle. Its my horse's way of tell me 'can I streach out my neck?' I think he does this more when in a snaffle because I am keeping him collected a lot longer then I do in a shanked bit. I tend to 'ride' more serious when I have him in a snaffle hehe. I get lazy with curb bits.
What he does (don't know if its the same thing of what your horse is doing), is he tenses his jaw and puts his nose out and down and back up again.
I normally ignore the first time he does it but if he asks for it again I let the reins out and let him walk or trot long and low so it helps him streach out a bit. After I do that he dosen't do it again.
i ride in a loose ring french link snaffle, but he does this without contact, and recently, without having a bridle on at all.
I would have the vet check for guttural pouch issues, or inner ear problems. Hmm, I wonder if it could be a nerve sensitivity in the bars of his mouth, or a horse version of TMJ?
What you're describing is what I have seen my choke-prone horse do when he's in a moderate to severe choke episode. His whole neck tenses upward, with his chin in to his neck, then he throws it downward.
Id consider having a chiro look at him possibly.
I had the chiro out last week - he did have a bone out of place ( some facial bone, not sure of the name), and i had assumed that might help with this stretching thing ( i was thinking more about it when riding at that moment) do you think this might just be him getting used to that?
