I am curious about caslicks...I have a mare that has been successfully bred (pasture) and successfully foaled twice. She was just AI'd and the stallion owner suggested she gets a caslick if the 18 day ultrasound shows her to be in foal. He says this is due to her "shelf"....which is there, but not extreme. She has always come back with a clean culture, so there isn't any indication of her contaminating herself. Never had any vaginal infections. I am not for unnecessary procedures and would like some other opinions on this. I have also read that once a caslick, always a caslick. Is this true?
If she has foaled twice before without the need, I don't know if it really is necessary. Maybe ask the vet when he/she is out for the ultra sound.
Thank you for your suggestion.
At the ultrasound prior to insemination, the stallion owner's vet agreed that a caslick was probably "good investment protection"...I can see the value in that, but as neither of my vets saw the need for it in that past, I'm looking for breeder opinions, those that have and those that don't--and why. I have done a lot of searches on the topic and haven't come up with much info other than vet research papers and general descriptions of the procedure.
Today, the stallion owner wasn't present for the 18 day ultrasound, and nothing more was said. She is in foal (yes!) so I brought her home. I am curious as to what the vet will suggest at the 45 day vet check!
I don't have an opinion but congratulations on the successful breeding :D I love your web site too.
Not to change the subject, but under the "grew and grew" section of your site. The last photo, is that one of those Farmtek horse shelters? If so how do you like it?
my old girl has a part caslick, only because she is very sunken due to her age. She never had any problems internally, it was purely a precaution. On the flip side, my neighbours mare had perfect conformation hence no caslick as she managed to infect herself and lose her foal after 45 days.
So the choice is yours.
Thank you for your comments on my web-site...it is a work in progress!
Thanks Bigsky we have a harbor freight local so will look into it.
My mare has a caslick because of her age and for extra precaution. She had a perfectly clean culture, but you can't be too safe. :)
