Breaking the Unhandled Mini
I've been given the opportunity to break and train a mini pony. This is my first time breaking anything. He needs to be trained completely to ride and drive, and needs to be transformed into a generally obedient pony good citizen Here is some background on the pony.

His name is Phantom. He is roughly four years old and was gelded about six months ago. He's my waist height, and I'm 5 foot one inch. He and his goat friend were rescued from a flood and were adopted by my BO. He now lives with a herd of four other minis.

He doesn't know anything. He's a blank state. He is broke to lead, but nothing else. I sat on his back once; he bucked a little but didn't freak out too badly. He's nearly impossible to catch. He's jumpy and unpredictable.

So... What is the first step in breaking this horse? I want to be as thorough as possible and definitely start with extensive groundwork. I going to break him to drive first and then to ride, with the help of someone very, very light.

Hmm so I have been told mini's are not meant to be ridden. We only drive ours. Please do a lot of research before trying to train a mini to be ridden.

Not for me or anyone anywhere close to my size to ride, but for 50 pound kids. We like to lead little kids around on them at pony parties. We are always careful about the weight limit and not overworking the little things.
