Placid, gentle horse indicators?
I'm not a horse person, but attempting to write a fictional story including horses. Q: Is there a way to tell if a horse and you are hitting it off on the first meeting? I've been told that if the horse's ears are folded back, it is nervous about you. If ears are forward, you are okay. Is this true, or just an old "stable legend?" What other ways can you tell if a horse -- on first encounter -- is happy about you?

That is true but some just keep their ears back anyway and love you (like my mare i think :) and if a horse doesn't turn it's back to you or walks off than it is not nervous...
