Rope halter too big...can you adjust?
My rope halter is too big for my horse-slides all around on her face when I try to ride in it, and slips down on her nose...any way to adjust it?? I can't figure it out but would like to either fix it or sell it because it was $30 and I would like it to get some use. Thanks!

What I do is a bit of a quick-fix. It won't change the size of the nose (you would have to adjust the knot under the chin to do that), but it will make the entire halter shorter so that your tie knot isn't up on their poll to get the halter tight enough.
If I have a horse with a very short or small head, I will tie the halter just under the knot to the tie loop. It makes it a little less secure because if the horse were to pull back, it would open the knot a bit but it works for what I need most the time.
I have a picture of it because I am not very good at explaining things like this in writing. This is a full sized horse halter on a 6 month old colt. http://i551.photobucket.com/albums/i...g?t=1298418369 http://i551.photobucket.com/albums/i...g?t=1298418419

That makes sense...I'll try it next time!! Do you know how well that would work with riding? It LOOKS like it'd work fine...but probably would still twist some when ridden in it?? I should just get a bitless bridle.

It probably would still twist some. Have to tried to adjust the knot under her jaw? You can make the nose smaller by threading some of the rope through into the lead loops then pulling it tight.

I did try to...I think I need to mess with it a little more though because it didn't seem to be working...it seems like it needs a LOT of adjustment...she just isn't "horse sized" I guess!
I guess my concern was that with trying to move things around too much I thought I might ruin the integrity of the rope halter and not be able to get things back to where they were. Is that a real concern or no?

As long as you don't remove the knot, it won't ruin the halter. Have fun!

Thanks for the info guys!

So long as you just take it slow and only try to do one thread at a time, it shouldn't be an issue. I've done that with a couple of mine.
Aspin's right though, don't ever take the knot completely out:lol:. There's no hope after that.
