There is a great series on worming at

The dec issue discusses worming programs for mature horses.

I worm my horses every two months and use Zimmertrin (ivermectrin) most of the time except when it gets closer to spring I'll mix it up.....

Our horses get dewormed only twice to three times a year (mainly because I don't pay for the dewormer). If I had my way, they'd be getting dewormed every three months.

I use a rotation of ivermectin, fenbendazole and Anthelcide EQ about every 2-3 months.

I worm every 8 to 12weeks. And i've been trying a few different wormers lately. :)

At the moment we worm every 2 months - or 10 weeks. But as El Nino has stopped here, we will be getting more rain, which means more nice green grass, which means...more worms :? So right now, every 10 weeks, soon, every 6-8 weeks.

As little as possible

Most horses I don't need to deworm at all. I work with the pastures and do FECs to know what horses need deworming, and then uses dewormers only to stop eggs from contaminating the pastures.

FEC in the spring, and those who need deworming gets moxidectin every 12 week (2-3 dewormings that year, depending on how long it takes for the snow to come), or ivermectin every 8 weeks, or pyrantel pamoate every 4 weeks. I rotate one year at a time. If we get a horse that shows positive for tapes, we use a dewormer containing prazikvantel one time.

All the stables I worked with (regarding parasites) have gone from massive deworming down to 10% of the horses needs regular deworming, in just 2 years. Parasitefree pastures are quite easy to accomplish if you put your mind to it. And that WITHOUT the deworming.

what is the first steps to deworming your pastures and how do you maintain them?

BeautifulBay 03-02-2007 11:59 AM

I worm every 8-10 weeks and rotate between Ivermectin and fenbendazole products.
