Digging up the past on my horses. Can you help?

I've had my horses for a year now. They came with a mysterious past that I desperately want to solve. Both are registered (one an oldenburg and the other a thoroughbred) but they didn't come with papers and the previous owner refuses to give me any information on them. I wouldn't have took them if I had known that the lady would be so sketchy. In fact I hadn't even known that the one mare was an Oldenburg until she shed out her winter coat. I've tried to identify her with the registry (I filled out all of the paperwork and a fee of $40.00) but they just called me and told me that they needed her sire or previous owner in order to do anything. Nothing I could do. So then I decided to try to identify the Thoroughbred Mare and filled out all of that info. Turns out they got no matches as well. Is there anything else that I could possibly do? If I were to post some pictures could you guys write an accurate description of the Thoroughbred? I think that was one of my downfalls when I tried the first time.

Does anyone have any ideas? This is really bothering me.
