Star's due in a week or 2!
Hey all! As some know, we have a surprise foal coming. we didn't know Star was in foal til TODAY and the vet came and said she was already starting to bag up! He gave her at least 5 days, 2 weeks at the most. It's a HUGE surprise because I didn't even suspect until last week when I noticed she was a LOT bigger than usual (I didn't notice over the winter b/c they get so fluffy. I just assumed she was very fat and needed a diet badly.)
I NEED NAME SUGGESTIONS! here's what I have in mind:
Colt: Rowdy, Crowley (after my old pony), Bullseye, and Troubador (trou for short)
Filly: Dusty (goes along with Star's showname, Stardusted Sky!), Bullet (yes, for a filly!), Sparrow, or Secretariat (Secret for short)
Which ones do you like? Which ones do you hate?
I am so excited! This is her 3rd foal and she is 8 years old, I am contemplating staying home from school to watch her, but I can't miss a week of school! Or maybe too. Plus she's always foaled at night when nobody's watching.
Got any tips? My trainer will be there, because that's where we board (he is also a very experienced Shetland Pony breeder, so he definitely knows what he's doing.)
I am kind of scared, though, because temps here reach single didgets in the nighttime, and one time a mare foaled a surprise foal and it died of exposure, of course that was in january, but still!
I CAN'T WAIT!
PLEASE POST SOME TIPS AND WHAT i SHOULD DO TO HELP HER OR COMFORT HER!
Congratulations! Babies are always very exciting! My mare actually had a lineback dun tovero colt named Roman last Saturday. Honestly... id keep her in a stall if at all possible. Also id leave her alone as much as possible until she has it. Shelby didnt like being messed with and she waited til everyone at the house was gone until she had him. She had him after noon as well. Id just give her her space and put her up at nights.
I have a question; how long after bagging up (like she just started like 2 and a half weeks ago I believe) do they usually have their foals? The vet gave us 5 days to 2 weeks, and that's kind of a big time range.... Also do you think I should get a foal blanket for it?
How exciting! A new baby! I like all of the names. I would wait until you see the foal then you can pick the name that fits perfectly. You may need a foal blanket depending on the weather.
As for your question about when she will foal. It really depends! My mare is a first time mama and likes to play tricks on me, she started bagging up over a month ago and still no little one yet. Start watching for her to wax or drip milk, although some mares just don't show any significant signs before foaling. Also watch for the baby to start moving into position, you will notice when you look at your mare directly behind her sides won't necessarily be as wide, but more flat looking and her belly with be much lower and "dropped" looking.
good luck with the little one!:D
Congrats! I think a foal blanket is a good idea this time of year, hope all goes well!
Id look more for wax beginning to build and milk dripping out her udders and down her legs. Most of the time it means you have a matter of a day or two. My mare was dripping ,i noticed, the night before but wasnt waxing over so i went to bed. No baby that morning. I fed her and checked her again and there was wax! So i was planning to stay up that night. I had a rabbit show and i was gone for 4 hours but when i got back at 2 pm there was a baby in the pasture!
So exciting! I can't wait to see it!
