Mutts: yay or nay?
Hello all :D I'm new to this forum and was just curious as to everyone's opinions on grade horses. I was recently given a mare (go look :-)) who I think is mostly quarter but definitely has some morgan. (i'll have to put a better picture up sometime so you can see). I've had a few people tell me she may have arab in her somewhere down the line. Anyway, anyone else here representing the mixed horses? Or have you had one in the past, and what all did you do with him/her?
Mutt horses in general are usually yay, after all you can't ride papers.
Breeding a mutt horse in a crowded horse market is nay. Some exceptions of course.
Right now, in the market we are in, I wouldn't breed a grade horse. But I have no problem buying one.
I think grade horses are great if they are bred for a purpose. Like sort of "designer horses" or something. If they are just someone with backyard horses and let them multiply like rabbits, then no. But if someone has created a cross for high performance in a certain situation. Like a perfect cutting horse for farm use, or the perfect kids horse. Blahblah you get my point?
It really just depends.
though I did breed my mare twice for grade foals (who I regrettably had to sell both foals when $ grew short after the younger one )
both were still high quality horses.. good conformation, great dispositions but they were bred with the intention of NEVER being sold (and unfortunately now the guy I sold them to has moved and sold them so I have no idea where my babies are)
MUTT HORSES ARE FINE!!!!
like everyhorse i know is
cross bred and i fine they are
very good because they excel
at more of a range then if it
was just purebred. hehe :)
I love my Belgian Paint Mutt :)
I love my mutt Jasper
He's like a puppy.
The best horse I ever owned was a grade. She was worth her weight in gold and the people who sold her to me for $2k were complete morons as she was worth 10 times this, even without papers.
When I buy a horse I care about their temperament, conformation, personality and ability or potential ability - I do not care much about papers or color.
Since most of the horses I have owned have been grade (some have been purebred, but never reg'd). I love them. I am not at all against purebred horses at all, either, but a good horse is a good horse, whether he is papered or not.
My current mare is QH/Walker cross, and she is a great trail horse, though I do pretty much everything and anything with her. Hoping to do some low key, fun shows this summer, and see how we do, especially in some of the gaming events, cause she can move!Lol!
