CPL Update. Please read.
For all draft horse and draft cross owners, I have updated my page on CPL. I know it is a long read, but please do aquaint yourselves with this deadly problem. I try to keep this page updated as new information comes to light. DavisU has stopped their funding for this, so it is up to owners, to keep up to date with latest findings.
Have a look at the various links on the page. Many show full-blown CPL, but remember, this started a long time before the pictures were taken. Check your horses early and check often.
Chronic Progressive Lymphedema
I am so saddened to see that the draft and draft crosses are battling a genetic(?) condition. Best Wishes and much success in fighting the offending genes.
Well we are not sure if it genetic in lines of drafts, (doesn't seem to be) but think it is genetic inasmuch as all Drafts are prone to possibly getting it. This because of the difference in skin makeup.
Certainly anyone owning any Draft breed, should keep a close eye on what goes on under feather. When purchasing a Draft of any breed, look out for staining on the back of feather. This might be a red flag that the horse has been rubbing his legs on something, because of being itchy. Also watch for horses biting at their pasterns when lying down.
If purchasing sight unseen, then request when the vet check is done, that he/she looks under feather for possible problems.
