which training dvds?
i'm going to be getting a young horse and i was wondering if any of you know of any dvds that are really good? certain ones that you really like. i like parelli but i don't know of any dvds he has for young horses and training to ride. i'm also gonna be helping out with a friends 3yr this summer so i will have some hands on too.
Clinton Anderson, Parelli, etc. are all good. Parelli is a little overrated, and the videos are expensive. I watched John Lyons (I think it was) and didn't like his methods. But that's me personally.
I would look up techniques on Youtube so you can see different techniques and not spend a fortune doing it.
^^ i agree, both parelli and clinton anderson are very good, although expensive.
Starting a horse is really just level 1 in Parelli and if you get them to level 3 on the ground first then it is really easy to start them under-saddle. On the parelliconnect website there are lots of video clips of colt starts that are useful too.
I didn't find John Lyons an effective teacher and his program is not very well organized/structured.
I've only watched Clinton Anderson's "Gaining respect and control on the ground", but I loved them. They are very thorough and are so easy to watch and then put into action! They are expensive, but you can usually buy them on ebay or amazon, we resold ours after we were done watching.

Works like netflix, you can watch as many different DVDs as you like. We did Clinton Anderson this way without spending a fortune.
These threads often create controversy (just a warning), but I LOVE my Clinton Anderson DVDs. They were expensive, yes. They are more valuable to me, though, than having a trainer come out and do the work for me or teach me in person. I can watch it so many times that It become habit and I can finish his sentences. I can rewind it whenever I need to. Can't do that with a trainer in person. I don't, however, buy into the expensive tack and aids they try to get you to buy. You can be resourceful and save a lot of money if you find quality alternatives.
One thing I like about Clinton is that he shows you the goal first with his mare Mindy. They he shows you how-to with an untrained horse. Then he shows you how to work with a horse that puts up a fight. This is far more realistic than most videos who only show a calm, trained, responsive horse. Doing exercises with a horse that is falling asleep is one thing. Working with a horse that decides to bold or rear is another and you need to know what to do in those situations.
Gaining Respect and Control On The Ground Series 1-3
LOL! I should have added a disclaimer  That's the only way to play it safe on here.
Here we go.
I can only speak for myself.

You may want to try Buck Brannaman or Martin Black to. i think they both have a colt starting video for about 50 bucks. I have not seen the videos but I have seen buck and martin n other videos. They are both western guys and are geared more toward ranch and working cow horse stuff but every horse needs to start somewhere. Just another opinion.:-)
