He came today!!
Stretch came today. He did really well in the trailer. I rode him and the girl gave me another lesson on how to work him. He was very patient. I did w/t on him only because I don't have his saddle fitted yet so I was bareback.
One thing I noticed, and this wasn't until after she left, is he is very weird on the ground. I asked him to trot in hand and he reared up and bucked two or three times then trotted. I'm wondering if it was excess energy? I asked him to lunge then to see if he was just being crazy and he thrashed around at the end of the lung line like a crazy kicking up his heels and such but still following a nice circle. It was kind of like a playful thing. I'm going to have to ask her about it next Monday, she's coming back to check up on us and help me work out any problems as well as dropping of his saddle for me.
I am going back out tonight so maybe I will lung him and have my mom video tape it so you can see and tell me if its snotty or being a kid (he's 5). If he is being snotty, I want to get after him for it while its still a small thing because he is 15.3 hands high and I'm five feet tall. I can't afford that risk ya know? I'm thinking he may have been excited to be out of the trailer and moving around but I can't be certian!
Anyway, I was really excited to get him, he led very well for me, she said sometimes he will just ignore you and simply walk away but he did okay, I will probably put a rope halter on him and work on his ground skills like leading and stopping with me and trotting in hand without going crazy, they aren't the best in my opinion. He rode extremely well though, he got a little excited at the trot so I had to slow him down some but a little -tap-tap- on the reins with my pinkies was all it took and he jogged for me. Given he hasn't been handled all winter except one day two weeks before I looked at him and the day I looked at him a week or so ago he is doing very well.
Hmm, maybe since he hasn't been handled that much, maybe he's getting all his energy out?
I'm guessing it is because he hasn't been handled all winter. He is riding extremely well for having it off though, I'm a little miffed by his ground manners. My mom is going to work on them though, she is way more confident than I am, I tend to be a little spineless with new horses. I'm silly and I'm afraid to give him a bad first impression. I also may have Nancy help but she can be rough and I don't want him to start flinching like I'm going to yank the lead rope.
Glad to hear that you got your new boy can't wait to see pictures of the two of you :D Hopefully you can work out the issues on groundwork, could be that he is just full of energy!
