Long term 'working student' positions... pros & cons?
Long term meaning 1 or 2+ years.

I have been seriously considering getting into one of these programs at the start of next year. The ones I am looking at include housing and a small salary. Generally, you work 5-7 days/week and board and even training is included for your personal horse.

My plan (which is just a rough draft lol) is to be a 'working student', and although a salary is offered, I am sure it is puny, so I may be looking at getting an additional part-time job. Also, if time allows I would look into junior or community colleges in the area and work on getting some type of degree in business. Eventually, I would like to branch off and be a barn manager, trainer, or even owner.

Pros (what I could think of):
-Housing included
-Connections established, beginnings of a reputation

The only con I can think of at this moment would be location. There aren't positions in my area that are worth anything to me. I would be away from family, people I know, etc. (actually, maybe this is a pro? Lol) I would have to haul my horse across states. Actually, I would probably have to sell/lease him to someone here in my state. Drive would be very long, ie coming home for Christmas, etc. or I just wouldn't every year.

What are your thoughts on all this? Any other things that I am failing to consider?

Thanks for reading.

P.S. It feels good to have somewhat of a plan in life. :)

If that's a good place where you'll learn a lot then I think it's a good plan. Personally, I'd still take my horse with me if boarding is part of the deal, but I can see the problems with it either.

I would love to take my horse, but honestly he is not talented enough to go as far as I'd like to be. It would just depend on a number of things.

Thanks for the reply! I'd love to hear from someone who has done something like this or knows someone that has :)
