Confirmation Critique: 6yr APHA mare?
They aren't the best pics, but if you could please just give me some pointers on her confirmation from what you can see, that would be great! She is 6yrs old on the 29th of this month, she stands 14.3hh, and weighs about 1,000lbs. The pics are from last spring. Thanks!
First of all, wow, she is absolutly beautiful! All i can see is that she looks a little toed in and slightly downhill, but i may be wrong as i am not very good at this kinda thing

Pretty color :) The pictures are not the best for this. The first thing I see is that she needs weight (I can easily see ribs in the last photo) bulking her up to the proper weight and taking better photos will give her a more fair critique. From these photos I do not see her toed in. I do agree she is build down hill and she stands a little under herself in the back. Her forearm could be longer (thus helping make her less down hill) I like her neck set and clean throat latch, her neck seems thin for a horse her size and doesn't compliment her head. Weight, could be a big part of this. She has smaller eyes than I'd like to see on her head but a kind look none the less.
Thanks guys. She is a little underweight right now, but we are getting her on some grain and free feed hay with the summer coming up. Like I said this was last spring (I think I said that lol) and she is a bit thicker now anyways, but is getting over a case of colic now so she lost some more weight. Any tips on how I can gets some really good confirmation pics when Ive got her back where she needs to be?
Nice horse........she also looks like she is a little camped under in the back....you should be able to run a vertical line from the back of the bum to the back of the hock right down to the back of the fetlock.
I'm no confo expert, but she is gorgeous
Thanks! I think so too hehe.
If the first photo was taken on level ground, then she is marked camped under. If you were to bring her back legs back 'til the canon bone was in a vertical alignment, it would be well behind the back edge of her butt, AND, she would become even more downhill. That is her major fault.
She also has tiny feet but they do look good and hard and Ive ridden a little paint mare like her and she was a total fiend for hard work, but needed to be shod all the time.
Her coupling is also a bit tucked in ( much narrower in the body where it connects to her hind end compared to the middle of her barrel.) this means less abdominal muscle for that "lift" of the back for self carriage.
She ahs good shoulders and neck tie in, but as said above, neck is thin and a bit weak. Groceries and work.
Cute mare and probably a lot of fun to ride.
