agree or disagree

does anyone disagree with my training method at feed time??
ok wat i do is i make my poppy face me and then i stand there and he waits for me to give him the comand to eat. if he goes to eat i just give him a light tap on his muzzle, and when i am happy with the him standin there i give him a cuddle and say go.

it just gives him some respect just so that he doesn't run over me
so wat u think??

I do it too sometime.

Dumas'_Grrrl 04-21-2008 09:20 AM

I keep the feed in the bucket untill my horses are calmed down...I refuse to feed when they are acting like crazies...Then I pour the feed into the trough and pet them while they are eating...touch their faces and rub their forlock.

I am pretty strict at feeding time. As I don't want to get hurt. I stand with the feed trought betweed me and the horses and they can not come over to my side...its my space...the whole 6' side of the trough I'm standing on...they have to be on the other side waiting patiently.

I don't know about the tap on the muzzle but Dumas was terribly head shy when we got him so we don't tap his face for disipline.

I do put the food in the bowl and make my dog wait to eat untill I give the command "go eat your beans"

I make my horse back up and wait without nosing me for the food, if he approaches before I leave the stall I chase him back with my "alpha-mare" body posture. He stands patiently without barging when I give him his evening grain.

Agree. So long as your guy isnt plowing you over, you're doing something right. :) Good job.

My horse has to wait for her food, when it's in her trog, she can eat.
I think it's useless to let your horse wait for you command just so he\she can eat.

It teaches them you are the boss. If boss mare come to the food bucket the lower horse will leave until boss mare is done. Same here: it's YOUR food till you let them eat. I don't tap the muzzle but I back them up from bucket if they are pushy or something.

I agree. :D I do that sometimes.

FGRanch 04-21-2008 12:08 PM

I certianly agree with that!

I do that also with Sonny also. I want him to not be pushy or get protective about his food...I'll make him wait for his food...I'll randomly move his food around...or I'll take it out and then put it back again.
