ottb: your experiences
Does anyone here have any experience riding an ottb? I've been asked to ride one. I've ridden her a couple times and I really like her. Of course she has those typical ex racehorse issues. She's spooky and flighty. But once you get her calmed down she'll give you a pretty decent ride. But if she spooks she'll get revved up again. She also won't pick up the right lead at the canter. I assume that's a typical ottb problem when they're being re schooled. But her left lead is beautiful and oh so silky smooth. I'm absolutely in love with it. *sigh*
She tosses her head a lot, particularly when I ask her to slow down or stop. I don't want to have to resort to a tie down if I don't have to. So what can I do to deal with this?
I used to have trouble getting her to go over poles. But I got her to walk over them for the first time today. Yay! Haven't tried a trot yet.
She does get awfully sweaty when I ride her though. I rode her for maybe 15 or 20 minutes today and her neck and back were soaked. I think it's probably her just being antsy and wanting to go, go, go. Should I ride her until she's calm and tired? Or should I stop when she gets super sweaty?
I'm absolutely in love with her. If I can fix these issues she'll be a dream to ride. If only I could afford to buy her and take care of her.
I've owned an OTTB for about 9 months now.
You are going to need a lot of patience. Be independent, make them go your speed, not the other way around.
Our right lead is still a problem for us. We can get it, it's just awfully off balanced.
