I went to my trainers this past Saturday for a clinic with Walkamile. As we entered the barn to access the indoor arena, I spotted a pot bellied pig. Not knowing how Walka would respond to the pig, I commented to my trainer, "Oh, Walka's never seen a P I G before." Then I realized that I had actually SPELLED out pig! Good grief! My trainer teased me throughout the clinic , spelling certain words. Good thing I can easily laugh at myself!
Have any of you done something ridiculous like that?
Haha, I would have done the same!
I always spelled W-A-L-K and C-A-R-R-O-T around my dog, no need to tease her about it when she wasn't getting what ever it was I was spelling. And I did it so much that once the dog wasn't even around and I spelled walk. I felt stupid.... and got teased. But yeah, I shook it off.
That's funny!!!! My non-horse friends all give me grief because my dogs are taught "whoa" not "stay".

I don't get it? If you had said the word pig instead of spelling the word P I G, wouldn't Walka have spooked???? :)
That's just it Farmpony, no he wouldn't as he has never seen a pig or heard the word pig. Just a knee jerk reaction on my part, spell out the thing that I didn't want to call attention to. Kinda like spelling cookie in front of my granddaughter to her mother to see if she can have one .
Walka has never spooked at anything except a tree stump , and only when it's on his left side. Everything else, he is curious about, but not afraid.
My girlfriend who was with me that day is still laughing at the expression on my face when I realized that I had actually spelled out the word pig.
 That's so funny, I think a lot of us have done some thing like that at some time!
So then he was just fine with the pig then?
That is one critter my horses have never encountered, don't know what they'd think....
No problem with the pig, the 5 dogs (2 bullmastifs, 1 long hair dachshund, 1 pom, 1 english setter), the donkey and all the other horses.
My boy really showed his mettle, and his trust and confidence in me. Can't wait till next month for our next clinic. Just helps us grow together as a team and helps me trust him more.
Oh, and I asked my trainer why they have a pot bellied pig in the barn. He said that the smell is similar to a bear , so it's just to help desensitize the horses. Thought that was a great idea, may have to get myself a pig!
Hmmm, that's very interesting.
You can never expose a horse to too many different things.
And a pig would be just a tad safer then keeping a bear in the barn, LOL!
hahaha thats just like how my nana says W-A-L-K instead of walk, around her dogs because if she says walk they go absolutely mental and one of them runs to grab his lead.
Oh that's funny!
My trainer will spell out W A L K and T R O T because all the horses are voiced trained and will immediately switch gaits if she doesn't spell them out. My 7yr old nearly fell off because she was trying to figure out what my trainer had just spelled out for her to do, instead of paying attention to her riding!
