okay...so i have been barked at enough about the fencing....which i have reasons that are too personal to share on a forum....i am fixing the BARBED WIRE FENCE and replacing it with a metal fence...but just a hint to all...if you drive around the south and west ...there are alot of barbed wire fences being used on farms and ranches...the front is fenced with wooden or plastic fencing and the rest is barbed wire....or it is all barbed wire...either way i am not the first to use it...and if i have to put another pasture up as fast as i did this one i will probably use it again....
and I did have a horse that tried to run through a metal fence and dang near killed herself so no fence is safe for a horse that spooks because they cant see what is in front only what is to the side....
i apprecieate everyone's concern and that makes me feel good that i am talkin to people that care about horses the way i do ...means we can understand easch other
but please...no more crtiques on my pasture...i am working on fixing it in between raising 5 kids and my brother and moving and having to let go of alot that i didnt want to let go of ....
be kind to all....even those that arent kind to you...for everyone is goin through some form of hardship
thanks guys...i love all of ya and enjoy these forums!!!!!!
Believe me I know what you mean :D Here in Kansas you rarely see anything besides barbed wire. Especially in areas with large (more than 100 acre) pastures. I've seen a lot of this country and know in some areas its mostly wood fencing. Here its T-posts or pipe and wire, its the only thing that will last. Don't let anyone make you feel bad about how you keep your horses. If their happy and healthy, thats what counts. They can get hurt on anything.
Yeah, I think they were just giving you some advice. ;) But I know sometimes it could be said in a way that is kinda insulting, but hey we're just trying to help each other out. :D
Vida made a good point, they can get hurt on anything. It's not like you put barbed wire fencing up to hurt them or something, where you live they use barbed wire, everyone lives differently, so it's alright. :)
thanks guys..you really know how to make a girl feel better..it just seemed that they were surprised that i would even think about doin that....but it wasnt by choice..i dont have much land...bout 14 acres...but money is tight these days so my metal fence is goin to be a little by little project!
i dont have a barn yet either..that is my main thing right now is getting one built..they have plenty of trees though so they have shelter...honestly though ..i had a barn at the old place and no matter what the weather they wouldnt stay in it
Yeah, do what's best for YOU. I know financially things can get a bit hard, we've all been through that!
by the way Poptartshop...your horse is adorable!
I have a shed/leanto for my girls in the winter and nothing but trees for the summer and they never use the shelter either. And yes, I have barbed wire too. It will take us years to get it all replaced little by little :D I even have chicken wire and a gate between them and my chickens. No ones gotten hurt on that yet either. Although one of my 2 year olds put her face through the window of my coop and got a little cut.
Aww thanks! :D
Yeah just do what's best for you, don't let anyone tell 'ya different!
i use barb wire too, vida is right, a lot of us kansans use it!!!! as i see it, it's not the barb wire that makes it's dangerus it's the horse that is turned out in it...... right now i'm in the procese of rebuilding fences my self ( been waiting for my husband to do it for 2 years), east side of my farm will only be barb wire fencing ( jerk next door has plawed in to our field) my padock will be fenced in with 3 barb wire and 2 hot. i check my fences weekley ( quad runner is great for that) unless those who have commented on our ways of fencing can flip the bill for "propper" fencing please keep the coments to your self......i know how carrie feels, in the same way i am in the same boat (kids and father in law wise)
We've only got barb wire!.. And ya know what ..Dumas NEVER jumped over the barb wire fence....!
He has jumped 2x's in 2days over our "hot" fencing........Grrrrrrr! We have a small pen (1 acre) for when the guys are working with the cattle out here... I want my 6 acre run back...My stupid horse is too smart!!!!!!
