So it's that time where our horses need their vaccinations done.
Anyways,I called the vet up and our vet randomly brought up vaccinations soo I found out that those DIY vaccinations at the feed stores aren't that great. They aren't handled properly. Some are over handled(frozen) and some are under handled which means you don't know if your horse isn't getting a good vaccine.
This year I am getting my horse her rabies as there have been outbreaks and we have raccoons, foxes, bats, and oppossums where we board so I don't want to risk it and so I will probably have them do the shots...it will cost me about $158 for everything and if my horse gets sick and catches the virus they will cover up to 5000 in treatment..they have this deal going on with this one person or something. So what do you think? Is that considered a lot of money?
Also I found out the EPM is around our area the vet said..or was in the past which I assume it could be the same..How can I prevent my horse from getting this?
All possible shots besides botulism + sedation + coggins + farm call run me $201/horse this year. So I'd say your price is within limits.
Shots for the five horses (all recommended of the area), four dogs, and two cats runs me about 500, which is including the farm call from the vet.
I have them do the cats and the dogs at the same time as they are already out here and it saves me having to load two cats that hate each other (one is my barn cat, the other is my house cat), and the three farm dogs that weigh around 100lbs each and my little beagle.
The dogs only need their rabies shot last year, and the cats needed rabies and something else I am drawing a blank on. The horses all got vaccinated for rabies, west nile, EW influenza, and tetanus (I believe that was all of them).
On the EPM thing... I do not think there is anything you can really do ro vaccinate for. I believe that the best preventative of to keep critters out of the horse's hay and watch what exactly they are eating like a hawk. Other then that I have no advice as we have no EPM here to my knowledge...
The prices between vets around here is ridiculous.... one vet charges $120 for teeth floating plus $40 house call and the other charges $60 plus $10 sedation and $35 house call.... Insane, but I am glad my vet is the cheaper one- he knows my horse .
That price seems very reasonable to me.
Okay,I wasn't sure. I usually do them myself but they told me that the shots you get from the feed stores aren't handled properly soooooo I figured I would have them do it.
Sounds reasonable to me.
If you want to save a bit of $$$ ask the other people where you board if they'd be interested in having their Vet work done at the same time so you could all share the Farm Call fee. I board with my trainer, she and I schedule The Farrier, Vet and Dentist to do all of our horses at the same time so we can split the Farm Call fee between the two of us. It's not a huge savings (less than $20 each usually) but it's something.
i will see..My vet lives down the road from me sooo maybe I can ride my horse down there or walk her down. I would be saving some.
I just had mine done, WNV, Flu/Rhino, Tetnus, Strangles (internasal vaccine, ew! lol), and E/W encephalomyelitis. I believe the cost was about $110 per-horse. I did not have rabies done as it's not an issue in my area.
I had four horses done with the above plus one teeth floating ($145) and coggins for all 4, and my total bill was $729. Yearly vaccinations reminds me why I do NOT need another horse, lol. Two of my others will need their teeth floated in 6 months... At least the expense will be spread out a bit, lol.
He did not charge me a farm call fee becase we had 8 total horses for vaccinations/coggins, 3 of which had teeth floated, and a 9th horse just coggins.
Okay,so my price isn't bad at all. I did mine last yr and it cost me less than $50 sooo when he told me the price I was like O.O
Anyways,I MIGHT get it done by another vet. Still would like it to go down a bit but if it can't than thats okay.
