The Mule or Not??
Some of you know that my trainer has a mule that he plans on selling and is right now my 4-H project. I really would like to buy him, but I'm not sure, so I'm asking people what they think I should do. His pictures are in a thread in horse pictures called Muley
These are the reasons I want him:
He's already in training in what I'm used to
He's mature (about 9 years)
he's really calm
I know his history
His biggest flaw is that he has haltering problems, but I think he's almost over that now
It would mean my trainer wouldn't have an extra mouth to feed, just one less of his own
i'll prolly get more attatched to him this summer since he's my project
i'd be able to do what i want with him, instead of being really restricted
Why I'm not sure I want to buy him:
I could buy a horse that would fit my $220 contoured saddle pad
I could train my own horse
People wouldn't make fun of me for having a mule
I could possible win a horse in a raffle
I'd want to buy him before may 15th if I can so i can say he's mine on my 4-H thing
I'd feel bad if he killed their dog........he hates it, and mules have a natural hate for mules
i'd have bills to pay
hope you guys can give me advice.... i should be able to work something out so that i work for my trainer for food and board and hoof care, but i'll still have to pay for vet, shots, and dewormers.....
Personally, I would hold off for now. You may decide in a while that you would rather have a horse (unless you are really drawn to mules). I don't know much about mules, but it seems like a horse could take you farther in whatever discipline you take interest in (I could be wrong). It seems like a good situation that you can use him for your 4H project right now, but that you don't have the bills that come along with horse/mule ownership, which can be a bit burden in an emergency or case of sickness. Even regular maintenance can get expensive... the longer you can put that off, the better :)
It seems like there were enough things in your "cons" category that would suggest you should hold off for now. I also don't think your trainer not having another mouth to feed is a concern for your "pros" column. In this big of a decision, you really have to think about YOUR "pros"
In the end, whatever you choose will be the best decision for you.. my advice or others' should be taken lightly... what does your gut tell you. :)
good luck with your decision.
i would say get the mule.
Mules almost never colic and have a great sense of self preservation. Meaning, they less likely to do stuff that may hurt themselves in order to save themselves.
I'm not going to make any decisions until I get to ride him a lot...... I'll let you guys now how he's doing
I say go for it! :D
