Suggestions on how to rid of rain rot?

My new mare had her first grooming today, previous owners didn't care for anything but the foals her and many others brought. She probably hasn't been groomed in a long time but she stood and let me, I noticed she has the beginning of some pretty nasty rain rot. Any one have any suggestions on how to get it stopped?

I've always heard Listerine the mouth wash and i know many people who swear by it.

Tea tree oil works great too.

Betadine works well. You can just put it in a spray bottle and spray it on where the rain rot is. :-)

You'll get a lot of good suggestion on things to try. The main thing to remember is that most of these bacterial/fungal type problems love wet, dark, airless environments, so after treating do your best to keep the skin dry and exposed to the sun and air.

Also pick the scabs off to help it heal better.

We spray them with scrubbing bubbles and let it sit. Then treat, scrub it well, loosening all the scabs, and rub down with chlorhexiderm ointment.

My friend has a horse that she works with that has nasty rain rot too. She looked online for some things on rain rot and she found an all natural spray that she uses. It works pretty well, and now that the horse is shedding it is coming off like crazy! Hope this helps!

Pick the little flakes off first thing, to allow it to heal correctly and you can use MTG. I swear by that stuff, recently my horse had some nasty rain rot on his face and I picked off the little flakes and put some MTG on it daily. stuff works like a charm
