Mares.

okay. well ive had 2 horses in the past. one was a gelding and one was a mare. personally i feel like i get along better with geldings because i feel they are (for the most part) less moody then mares tend to be. recently ive been shopping around for horses again and my grandfathers friend has a free 15 year old reg. QH mare that they absolutly want me to look at. im a bit sceptical since its a mare and ive had horrible expierences with mares. tell me youre storys about mares you never thought you'd get along with. and how you knew when you guys clicked.

That's funny because I have always preferred mares myself, not sure why. But then I only ever had 1 that acted marish at all and the extent of that was it was a real pain to walk her down the barn aisle, she has to stop, squat, and wink at every stall, lol. I once had someone tell me that if you get a good mare you get a great horse and if you get a great gelding you get a good horse. Just what someone told me. I have had geldings as well and like them just fine. I think it has a whole lot more to do with your personality and the horses and whether or not you click, not so much the sex, or the color, etc. My suggestion is what could it hurt to look at her. But don't make your decision on just because she is free.

I've always ridden geldings, the one mare I was put on was a complete psycho that no one wanted to ride. (I suffered from a little bit of 'black stallion syndrome' and thought I could tame her lol) Since then, I've always gotten along better with geldings and I assumed that's what I'd always have. But this weekend I'll be riding my boss's mare for the first time, and I'm SO excited because I've completely fallen in love with her. She's drop dead gorgeous, but she is very mare-ish. She doesn't get along with any other females, just the old friesian gelding next to her. She lunges at other horses in the aisle, threatens to bite when you put her blanket on, etc. Yet I still love her personality because she has an extremely sweet and loyal side, she really wants to please you. Who knows how the ride will go this weekend but I love her when I'm on the ground at least!

Might as well go look at this horse, what could it hurt?

A horse is a horse. Personally I prefer mares and own two. there both witchy but I love my 10 yr old And she's broke to death I can put a 5 year old on her. I just got on my filly for the first time she did nothing. I find some geldings bratty and lazy. They try to get out of work more in my opinion. But I loved some I had alot. My last colt was a Very willing little horse. It just depends on the rider I think and how well you deal with Moody horses. But at 15 this mare should be pretty well broke and mature mentally. It doesn't hurt to try her out.

The majority of mares I know have very gelding-like personalities. They aren't mareish or hussies when in heat. In fact, you wouldn't even know they were in heat.

I prefer mares. I like their mareish attitudes more than geldings. I didn't even notice Abby was in heat until she met another little pony mare while the vet was up for everyone last week and they both did this little squeaky noise. She's not a jerk, nor does she throw her butt around to geldings, etc.

Won't hurt to go check her out.

I have a mare and a gelding, I don't find much difference in them except for personalities. The last time my mare was in heat, she tormented my gelding like CRAZY! It was funny to watch. But she wasn't mean, spooky, witchy... nothing.. her same old self.

You should go look at her! You never know what you might find!

my mare is..mare-ish. She is a hussie when she is in heat..buuut she is very sweet and kind at the same time. I prefer mares as my horse keeps me guessing and working with her. She doesn't EVER get boring. I love her to pieces. I've ridden a gelding..I found he was a lot more calm and more willing.

you're lucky! My mare is in heat and she throws her butt towards geldings and tries peeing on them when I'm right there! She doesn't care and it takes all my strength to get her away from her men that she looooves so much at the moment...mine can be a...skanky thing.

All mares here...wouldn't have it any other way. None are mare-ish, all are very trusting, have lots of personality, and always give me 100%.
