Calming too excited horse
I'm looking for something daily use to calm down the horse. She gets EXTREMELY excited about everything: other horses, my other horse leaving, etc. etc. etc. May be it's hormonal issue, not sure, but looks like it's just her nature (and it's NOT spook). And it just gets worse. Putting her into work doesn't help much. I was thinking about using something like daily quietex. Is that a good idea? Any other calming agents I can use?
We have a mare who had high anxiety when she came and we put her on this stuff called Mare-Alleve. I have one of my mares on it as well and it really works. You can give it to nervous geldings as well.
All it is is casteberry and raspberry leaves and magnesium, so it's all natural. Just herbs.
Here's their website:
Huh, that's interesting...I'll have to remember it.
Thanks a lot, koomy56! I certainly will look into it. Do you give it just when she's in heat or all the time?
All the time! :) It's great because it doesnt make the horses act sedated by any means, just helps them work through issues and have a calmer demeanor about life. :) It's not too expensive and I havent had one horse that didnt like the taste. We only have 3 on it, but still. :)
What's her current diet?
Epson salts work really well too! They are a muscle relaxant as well as a laxative so only very small amounts are used.
My endurance trainer feeds a small amount (about a teaspoon or 2) with their normal feed mix. She trains arabs who can be really excited at times. She swears that if she didn't feed them epson salts then some would be uncontrollable! :)
vitamin B is good for calming horses and can be used every day.
^^^ yup! you can get a vitamin b supplement to add to their feed every day. it works really well. i know someone who gets vitamin b shots for her mare before shows because she gets so exciteable at shows.
Give her something to do. I would cut all feed out completely and give her a job. Lunge her, make her work!
