- - Saddle Decision.... (http://www.horseforum.com/horse-tack-equipment/saddle-decision-83734/)
I have been so indecisive with this Stubben saddle. I've had it for over two weeks (the girl has been incredibly patient with our crappy weather!) and have ridden in it three times. (Once after being thrown last week).
So far, it is the best fitting saddle I have put on Chili and that has been my biggest saddle finding issue. It's perfect for my price range too.
My "iffiness" comes from the following:
- The seat is slightly too big (19" and I need an 18-18.5") but I can deal with this since it fits Chili.
- One stirrup feels shorter than the other even though the leathers are on the same numbered hole. I dunno if this means the leathers are stretched out(??) or if there is something wrong with the way they are attached or if I have one leg that much shorter than the other (it throws me slightly off balance). :-)
- The billets will need to be replaced as they are worn very thin on the holes I will need to use.
All in all, I think these are flaws in the wear/tear of the saddle, not in the fit and can all be overcome (except, obviously for the seat size!) I offered her less money so I can get them fixed. Not sure if she'll take me up on the offer or not.
There is another similar saddle for sale in GA (about 7 hours from me) in a sz 18" and it *appears* to be the same size tree/gullet but I'm petrified of trying something else out and possibly losing the one that DOES fit her in the process.
So... I've decided that instead of swapping saddles, my hubby will be bringing her cash tomorrow. I'll be sure he has the full amount in case she won't budge on the price but am really hoping she lets it go for $400....
Looks like I'm officially an English rider.... and could stand a few lessons! LOL and some breeches or chaps, boots, bridle. :P
Glad you made a decision. I am fighting becoming an English rider just to find something to fit Froggy but...if I can't find something better Western, I might just have to. I have a great Aussie but if I wanted to do some fun shows with him, I would need a Western saddle...*sigh*
Froggy is narrow built with high withers, right?? And you need a 17" seat.... what length of a skirt? Semi-QHB?
UGH I also sent an email to Southern Trails about a saddle he has but I doubt he'll go for the price I humbly offered. :-)
She accepted my offer, so technically, I won't own it til this afternoon when my hubby meets her in town to pay for it but since it's sitting in my livingroom - it's MINE!
Hmmm, after inspecting it further there are more "issues" that I'm not sure about. There is a small crack in the leather which has created a "slit" on one of the saddle flap. The stitching on one of the panels in the front of the saddle is showing. The other side, you cannot see the stitching at all.
I already got her to lower the price because of the billets and stirrups being off kilter. I dunno whether to ask her to lower it again. Am gonna take photos and upload here for advice... prolly different thread. LOL
pictures of the "issues"?
haha - i saw you're going to post pics so nevermind. :P
after reading about the issues, im "iffy" too but what gets me the most is that the saddle doesn't fit YOU. what i tell my students is that if they want to improve their riding it is equally as important that their saddle fit THEM as it does the horse!
CJ - it fits well enough. I should be in an 18.5, this is a 19. It's not that big of a difference.
1/2 an inch can make or break your solidity in your tack. As CJ is saying, our saddles are supposed to aid us, not hinder us.
I think you should keep looking, to be honest.
