| chivas | 04-14-2011 01:10 AM | Severed back leg/hock So my 3 year old filly got her leg caught in the fence.. as they do! She very badly cut the inside of her near back hock. My vet came and saw to the injury. Just cut the tendon sheath and maybe only just cut a small part of the tendon not 100% sure. A huge dose of antibiotics (penicillin) for first ten days, bute for the first five, stalled totally for the first three days. We're now at day 14 and on sulprim twice a day. I stopped the bute after day 5, she didn't seem in any pain. The wound looks great and is almost completely closed in. My vet is amazed at the speed of healing. I'm stabling her overnight and for most of the day. Letting her graze in small paddocks for about an hour or so each morning and night. She is trotting and even loping on this leg! My guess is that she didn't sever that tendon or she wouldn't be capable of doing this much. I have pictures if it might help? Has anyone had similar experience. How much rest did you allow? How long before you let them back in a paddock again? How long before you started light exercise again? What is the GREATEST stuff for minimal scarring? |
