Feeling the after effects of keeping up with a 12 and 13 year old in lesson yesterday
Ouch. I had a fabulous lesson yesterday. Got those heels down at the canter, got that pesky right should to stay put where it's supposed to be, and even jumped without getting left behind or banging my boy in the mouth:D.
I was really proud of myself because I was riding with my 13 year old and her 12 year old friend, and I pretty much did everything they did (except the 12 year old can jump a course).
Fast forward to today and the old hips are awfully creaky. I'm proud that I don't have muscle soreness, so I'm in good shape. But the joints, well they are not 13 anymore ... Oh well, I'm not going to stop riding! More glucosamine, I guess!
Ha! That's great. :D Yes, even though I'm the ripe old age of 32, my knees and ankles are taking a beating in lessons. (I've only been back for about 4 months now) I don't remember my knees hurting at ALL 12 years ago.
Oh, well. At least I'm old enough to enjoy some Grey Goose after a lesson.
Hey, I didn't think of that. I think I'll make some hot tea with a little "extra" flavoring in it ...
I wonder why different people feel it in different places? I've heard a lot of people complain about knees (and how expensive stirrups can help), and some complain about ankles. For some reason it's my hips ... I do have a wide quarter horse, wonder if that has anything to do with it?
YES. My first 2 or 3 lessons back into the saddle, my hips hurt like hell. To the point I was looking for some painkillers I had from a few months before. And I started my lessons on a nice QH mare who had wonderful gaits, but her girth was rather large.
After 3 or 4 lessons, my hips didn't hurt again. But my knees are slightly sore and my ankles as well. Nothing major, just some normal wear and tear stuff. Of course, if I did more exercise-wise than just ride, it would probably not be so bad.
I'm 14, and I ride daily as long as I'm feeling up to it, but I'm not in good health and I have the same problems, although what takes the shock depends on the discipline I'm riding. Jumping, it's horrible in my knees and kinda in my ankles; dressage is pretty bad on my hips; western, especially gaming, hits my lower back pretty hard; and it also varies on the horse and how much I'm riding. The day after a trial, I'm stuck on the couch. But the one thing that I feel actually helps is taking a couple ibuprofen first thing in the morning, then taking a cold shower. About an hour after the shower, I rub horse linament over the areas that are sore. I also wrap my ankles and knees if that's what is sore so that it just has extra support and they don't hurt so bad to walk on, and I have a back brace for the extreme days. Hope these help, I've had to adapt cause there's no way this stuff is gonna take me outa the saddle!
When I do my trot outs for conditioning, my right ankle sometimes talks to me - loudly and rudely. I tell it to shut up and drop my stirrups for some relief. The next day, my abs tell me that was not their favorite strategy for addressing the problem. Oh well, can't make every muscle group happy I suppose!
lol, I guess everyone has their own issues. I love it that I'm able to ride so much as a forty-something. And I do recall lots of aches and pains as a teen. Bring on the advil, epsom salts and glucosamine!
