not meant to be
about 7 years ago I started taking riding lessons at a local stable from an older man who owned and boarded horses but there was one particular horse i was quite fond of her name was My Lady of the Night .. Lady for short she was a jet black Tennessee Walking Horse the most Beautiful horse i've ever seen .. and every time i'd come in she would stick her head out of her stall and beg for attention it was amazing to me how attached I could get to something like that after only seeing her once then over time i would go see her every time i was there for months and I wanted to buy her so bad but i didnt have the money at the time I was only 17 years old and one day i came in and her stall was empty and i asked John (the guy who gave me riding lessons and the man who owned the barn) and he told me she had been sold .. and i have often found myself over the past years thinking about her but so much more recently and i found an old picture of her and i'm now in the situation to own a horse so I decided just to give John and call and see who owned her just to see if she was ok.. and he told me he sold her to a girl who use to work for him and that she had moved to California and she might be for sale so i nervously texted the girl to ask her about the horse .. but unfortunately she isnt for sale so im quite devastated but I told her if she ever decided to sale her to let me know .. but i guess it just wasnt meant to be then and it still isnt meant to be now =[

I'm sorry. I hate it when that happens...I've been in the 'horse search' a few times now, and that's really frustrating. Then again, she might've had some issues that you couldn't see (health or riding) so maybe its for the best. Its hard not to get attached to the first horse you look at when you're searching. Be careful though, that you don't give your heart away to one before you've thoroughly investigated all of its health and personality quirks! You will likely end up buying it and being heartbroken at having to sell it when the issues come to light. I speak from experience...its like dating. Don't give yourself away until you're sure!

That's the trouble with lesson horses, there's always one you get attached to. I'm currently in love with a coloured Friesian x at my riding school, I love how he feels to ride, I love jumping him and even on his bad day when the wind was high and he was spooking we still had an absolutely amazing lesson. Lovely stable manners, brilliant to put a bridle on which when you're 4ft 11 like me is definitely a plus and saves a lot of frustration when a horse realises he only has to raise his head a little to be out of reach. He's a stunner and I could quite easily see riding him in shows and low level SJ. Every time now I'm up for a lesson I go across to him and he's a sucker for attention. Honestly if I had the money and they would sell him I'd have him. It's my little fantasy and if I was buying then I would be looking for something that is similar to him as he is my ideal type of horse, one that has spirit and makes you work but at the same time looks after you and you can have fun on him, even when we had a bolt because he was spooking in the wind and at the very scary, horse eating wheel barrows he still felt safe. I've told my instructor that next time there is a jumping competition to just book me straight onto him as he brought my confidence back over a course after a nasty fall while doing one on another horse.
Can you tell I'm in love or is it too subtle ;). However when you go looking for a horse bear in mind the mare you loved, think about what qualities you loved about her then look for a horse with those qualities. It won't be the mare but it will be what you love.

When did you talk to the girl that has her? Don't lose all hope, yet, I'd say. Wait it out a bit. For real.
I'm not trying to get your hopes up, but, in a week or two or a month it could change, you have planted a seed in this girl's mind.
Of course, she might love her just like you loved her, and well, all I can say is be glad she is still alive and well and being loved.

However, I only say maybe wait it out for a minute, because this happened to me.
When I called the lady who bought my boy, she was like, oh, well, he is my brother in law's horse, etc. and he just fell in love with him. I cried my heart out for 3 days. Next call was: You can come visit if you like. Joyful tears.
Upon arriving to visit: If you have X amount of money you can take him home with you today.
This was PROBABLY unique to my situation, but, there's always hope. I am glad you were able to find her, though. Don't you feel better about that or did it make it worse on you?

a few days ago she seemed quite sure that she wanted to have her shipped to California to be with her she has had her for like 7 years so im sure she is quite attached to her part of me wishes it wasnt the case but the other part of me is happy that the horse has a good home

I gotcha, and I don't blame you. My heart is with you, in any case, I know it is hard for you, personally. <3

I just hope i can find the right horse

Dusty1228 04-24-2011 12:30 PM

You will, it may just take time. Just be careful and don't be too harsh on your judgments of future horses, because none will be EXACTLY like her. Good Luck<3 There's a perfect horse out there for you, you will find her/him. :)

I second Dusty. Good luck in the search. I hope you are able to buy her, but if not keep an eye out for those traits!
