My mare gets FAT the second the grass comes up, and unfortunately my BO won't let me put her in a paddock and she's already only a teensy amount of grain. She gets ridden 5-6 days a week, so she's definitely getting plenty of exercise, she's just a pig! Anyways, much as I hate to do it I think I'm gonna look into getting her a muzzle so she won't be so darn chunky this year. I've never used muzzles before though, so anyone have any reccomendations on brand? Thanks in advance :-)
I really like my Weaver. The nose is padded and there is a leather strap across the pole incase they get it snagged on something. Once I got it adjusted properly my haflinger never could get it off by himiself which is a bonus with that horse. My other concern was hair rubs, but he had none all summer. I highly recommend it.
Thanks so much, I'll check them out :)
Whatever you get, make sure it's breakaway and well-fitted.
I think mine are Weaver's, they are neoprene in the muzzle section, with a lot of neoprene padding and the leather breakaway strap.
I could not live without them, as I have two QH air ferns and a 10 H pony out on good pasture 24/7. The pony pretty much lives in his as this time of year.
Given the situation you describe, I think it's a good weight control measure to try.
Just ignore the guilty looks they give you. Laugh!
Mine is sure he will starve to death while he wears his, that has yet to happen.
True, the pony is resigned to his and prefers it to being locked in the dry lot alone; the one QH gives me a look that could curdle milk when I put his on.
I love the Weaver! It comes with a breakaway leather crown that you can buy replacements for. I have had a slight issue with rubbing on the bridge of the nose on thin skinned horses (think arabs) but if this is a problem you can put something there to help with it. It also has a little ring underneath for leading to and from pasture, which is really handy. And tons and tons of adjustments.
My mini hates me for it though o.o She didn't wear it for an entire year and when I brought it back out she turned a full 180 and walked away haha.
Sorry its taken me so long to get on here, I've been attacked with school work :/
Thank you all so much! I loved the Weaver I looked at; my mare already is kept 24/7 (they require halters on horses at all times) in a weaver and I love the fit on her. Unfortunately, my mom just happened to think the other day that if I were to put a muzzle on her, I'd have to go every morning while they're feeding to take it off then put it back on. They won't remove it, particularly one that is like a built-in halter, and she obviously can't eat grain with a muzzle on... Soo, I guess I'll be stuck trying to make sure she gets ridden her usual 5-6 days then maybe lunge her another day and just do my best to keep her weight down. Gotta love ridiculous BOs, right? :( But thanks anyway everyone.
Wait a minute - what?
You're worried about her not being able to eat grain?? If she's fat enough to need a grazing muzzle, why is she getting grain, and why is her inability to eat it a bad thing? How much grain is she getting? Is it possible that's a way bigger problem than the grass?
Just for reference, my horses get no grain. Period. I buy a bag of pelleted feed once every 3 - 4 months to have something to rattle in a bucket to catch them, and I usually throw out part of the bag because it's old and stale.
