Horse shoes
How many people have their horse shod or barefoot? Also why do you choose to have them like that?

Sonny is barefooted and will probably always be. I keep him barefoot for really 3 reasons
1) he has great feet...he doesn't need shoes
2) it's healthier for a horse to be barefooted (IMO)
3) I couldn't afford shoes on him anyways

Vega and Gem are both barefoot.

We don't do anything with them that would require them to have shoes.

Like Sonny, i feel it is healthier for them to be barefoot (better circulation IMO)
I don't have to worry about them throwing shoes.
They have better traction without shoes on.

And both of them were barefoot when we got them and we just kept it that way.

Lexi is barefoot, I also agree. It's healthier for the hooves & cheaper, too. :D

All three of our Paint mares are barefoot and they all ride fine over almost anything. I do avoid that nasty, sharp driveway type gravel, though. BTW, riding barefoot on asphalt part of the time is a great way to help keep them trimmed.

my 2 are bare foot, it's doesn't cost that much around here for our horses to be shod, $25.00 for a trim and $50.00 to be shod

Wow... I'm surprized how many are barefoot...My guys are barefoot.

Same reasons as stated already. Cost less, no worry about loose/lost shoes, better for the horses.

buckaroo2010 05-02-2008 11:26 PM

yeah thats the same as my farrier charges $25 for just trim and $45 I think for shoes

both my boys are Barefoot. And i trim them myself :D

Ours have always been barefoot too. Only one time did I feel they needed shoes/boots but that was fairly mountainous, rocky terrain. I think I was more worried about their feet then they were  We do keep a pair of boots now for those trails.
