Horse shaking the head...

My qh started shaking her head like crazy again. The reason is flies (not the bitey ones, but those tiny ones getting into eyes and nostrils). I attached my fly mask tonight so hopefully it'll protect the eyes, however I'm afraid she'll be still unhappy about those flies getting to her nose (and they seem to ignore the fly spray). Should I just ignore the shaking (kinda NOT letting her shake by keeping reins tight) and ride her through it hoping she'll get use to it, or it'll never go away? My biggest concern is that I can't use the mask (even) at the show, so I'm truly afraid she'll start her "shaking" in arena... :-(

I hate to suggest it, as I've never tried one and it's pricey for what it seems to be, but have you looked at anything like this?
Dover Saddlery | Net Relief Muzzle Net .

I'm not sure if it's show-legal, but for the purposes of riding at home maybe you could get a good look at one and make your own for a little less cost? A lot of fabric stores have thin, fine meshes...

Otherwise, is there any reason to not use something like Swat ointment for the show? It comes in a clear formulation. I know it's meant for wounds, but I don't see how using it for some extra anti-fly oomph around the muzzle would hurt.

Good luck!

Thanks, Scout! Wow, I've never seen anything like you gave a link too! I don't think it's show-legal, but it looks like a nice idea. I gonna give it a try to my regular riding fly mask to see if its enough, if not I may look into yours (I agree, it's very pricey). Fly sprays/ointments don't seem to work much with those small ones. :(

Nose net and fly ears. Show legal for show jumping, you need permission from the judge at C for dressage and eventing.

There are also headshaking supplements, NAF, Equine America and Global Herbs all do one, apparently they work wonders.

Thanks, Levade! I think I may go with the one Scout posted. I tried mask today and while it was better still she went crazy when there was a fly around. :( Its very frustrating should I say....
