i need help putting weight back onto my 16 year old American Saddlebred. he does this every spring/summer but this year he is loosing more then usual. i have put off riding him for a while now and have changed his food back to tribute, we had him on senior horse feed but it didnt seem to be helping at all.
A little more information would be helpful. Is he on pasture? What is his turnout schedule? Is it possible he is losing the weight over the winter and you are just not seeing it because of a thick coat? Saddlebreds have a longer, leaner build anyway, so weight loss tends to really show up on them. I have one that battled weight loss for a number of years, but a huge part of his issue in the summer was bugs. He would spend so much time trying to rid himself of flies and other pests that he wasn't eating enough. A change in his turnout and the addition of a fly sheet and mask, and spray on the exposed areas helped a lot.
he is now a pasture horse. i put him in a stall for feeding time then let him out again when he is done eating, i cant keep him out to eat his food because of my other horse. but i know for sure that he gains the weight during winter and looses it during spring and summer.
