Vitamin A help
Well I just got back from picking up my new horse. He is not in the best of shape I am sorry to say. He is very thin, dirty, has been beat up by another horse, has a lot of dandruff, and maybe hass lice the seller told me as I was driving away with him. I am putting him on nutrena Safe Choice feed, (with a little sweet feed mixed in until he gets used to the new grain). It is still too cold here to bathe him but I have groomed him extensively and he has tons of dandruff and seems to be very itchy around the face (and is losing a bit of hair on the face and crest of the neck). I have been researching these issues on this forum and have learned that lice mostly come on animals that have depleted their vitamin A. Some posters have suggested injecting horses with vitamin A. Can someone give me more advice on this please? Is it something I can buy at a feed store and squirt in their mouth? Or are there horsey vitamins or something I can get? I have never even heard of this before.

You use cattle injectable vit A and D that is available at places like TSC. You DO NOT inject the horse tho. Just put about 5 CC over the feed or in the mouth to give the horse a good boost at first.

Then get the horse on a high vit A supplement in its feed. I hear some of the the mare and foal supplements are high in Vit A.

There are also powders to treat the I had to do the same thing on my yearling I got from a horse the feed store & ask. I scrubbdd it in with the hard brush 1x a week for 3 weeks. Cleared the lice right up! The lice caused bald patches on my baby too!
Good luck!!!!

thank you for everyone's help. I am not even 100% sure he has lice, I haven't seen any of the bugs but he does have bare patches on his face and cheeks. I am going to stop at the feed store this morning and see what they have.

The bugs are hard to see but the eggs arent part his mane...if there are tons of white thing stuck to the hair shafts then it is lice for sure. You can look up pictures of what to expect too.
