Odd spots on hind legs?
So, George had some patches that I thought were just really
stuck spots of mud on his lower back legs that no one has cleaned off since he hasn't had a bath in a few years. I gave him a bath a few weeks ago and scrubbed them off, not thinking about it. They came right back in the same place. It's definitely not mud. It looks like caked mud, but when I went to just curry it off it doesn't come out. I pulled at it a little and it pulled off and didn't seem to bother him any. It also pulled the hair out and left an odd patch. Here's a picture of it all scrubbed off from his bath today... http://i54.tinypic.com/qwx8op.jpg
The light patch is where it was...
I have no idea what it is... maybe a fungus of some sort? It's puzzling, since it just won't go away!! Any ideas?
I'll have to get pictures of the before if it comes back again.

Subscribing...a horse at my barn has something similar....same exact spot, just not as much hair is coming off, more in just spots, and small patches

looks like scratches to me, they are a pain in the rear to get rid of. It's from being in a wet/muddy environment.

Have you tried M-T-G? It stinks, but works wonders on a lot of different ailments!

Sounds like scratches to me. My boy gets them every year. I agree with gigem88, M-T-G works amazing on scratches.

Scratches are painful and an infection and will feel crusty. They are usually on the lower back of the fetlock also only.
Cannon crud is basically overactive sebacious glands and can cause hair loss when you try to clean it. It doesnt usually feel crusty but more waxy. It looks like mud stuck in the hair. Id bet the barnyard this is what it is so far frrom your description. A treatment protocol is in the article also that helps get rid of it.

That description from the article you posted sounds EXACTLY like what he has! Thank you so much! I will be on my way to treating it soon! Too bad that if that's what it is, it won't go away for good. =/ Oh well!
