Western hat?

Okay, so how do you guys keep your western hat on? I know your supposed to wear it a bit before using it at a show so that it adjusts to fit your head, but is there any other tricks I should know to keep that hat on? Also, I know you should use it for halter classes, but in Indiana, are you allowed to wear the hat during horsemanship and pleasure classes? or is it law to wear a helmet?

Here, there's no law about helmets, so I can't help you there. Some do, but most don't. My daughter wears her hat for showmanship, then switches to the helmet for her other classes.

As for keeping the hat on, some use bobby pins, but we've had great success with hairspray! You spray the inside of the hat (where it touches your forehead) along the band and then put the hat on quick before it dries. Makes a pretty good glue! Haven't lost a hat during a show yet. ;)

okay, thank you!

If it's for 4-H or a 4-H sponsored show, anyone under 18 is required to wear a helmet.

I second the hairspray, but if you are wearing a felt hat be careful there isn't enough to soak into the hat band, my shad belly got ruined as a kid that way. Folding up some tissues and stuffing inside the band will help also (will also absorb sweat and keep from staining your hat)

hairspray,and bobby pins work wonders!!
18 and under are required too, but some barns require you to also. I think it may also vary state to state also, but not sure on that one.

Double sided tape. Just put a little strip of it across the inside band where it touches your forehead and it will stick good, lots of reining horse folks do that. You may have a bit of a tough time getting it off though .

I never thought of that!!How would you suggest getting that off if you did use it though?

No, I mean trouble getting your hat off your head :D. I would imagine that it would be fairly easy to just peel the tape off the inside of your hat after each use (or just add another piece at the next show).

I've never had to use these methods myself since I don't show. All my hats get a stampede string instead.
