What's going on here?
Since about Friday, my mare has been very...off. Very restless, very high-strung and reactive, quite jumpy, and just generally out there. Normally, she's calm, quiet, relaxed and you could light a firecracker nearby and she would -maybe- consider reacting. Friday also just happened to be the day where this cold front moved in, bringing wind, rain and bitter cold. I noticed on Saturday too that she was in heat (winking, peeing, etc).
I know a large part of her behaviour was because I myself was angry and frustrated with her for being such a tool, and also because I was not in any mood to work with difficult horses in such weather but did anyways. Today, however, I went out quiet, calm and in a -somewhat- good mood, and though she wasn't as bad as she was all weekend, she was still much more restless, jittery and unfocused than I'm used to. Part of me wonders if she's still just in flight sort of mode over our bad experiences this weekend, and another part wonders if there's legitimately something wrong.
Health wise, I think she's ok. She is way overdue for a worming so is in poor condition that way, but otherwise, I can't think of anything that might be setting her off, especially because I haven't rode her for several weeks-all I'm doing is walking her.
What could be the matter?
I can't say for sure, but she may just be in heat. Period.
If you are worried, call a vet. Calls are free :)
Maybe she remembers that your we anxious/irritated on the weekend and was anticipating the same thing. If this is the case then it should get better every time that you guys have a good experience together. If not, is there any wild animal that could be hanging around her pasture? Pigs invaded the pasture of the mare i lease and she's still spooking two weeks later =[ If not, than maybe consult a vet.
Hope this helps!
How long do a horse's cycles last? I guess she started Friday or Saturday (or maybe before, and I just didn't notice).
Sounds to me like your mare is in season, they usualy last between 5 and 7 days but like in humans this varys horses to horse. Most mare have a cycle every 28 days durning months march/april to august/septmeber.
You can buy suplents to help calm your hormonal mare and her mood swings, which may help although they seam to have little effect on my horse haha.
