Gum Color Question?
Just wanted to know if horses can have part dark colored gums, (like in a chow chow dog or husky) A mare i ride has darker areas in the gums over where the bit is. It's not where the bit comes in contact with the gums, but higher.... is this because of health problems or is it natural? She never seems bothered by anything in her mouth, and seems healthy overall, but i want to be sure. As far as i know she's had this for a while (possibly forever) but i just want to make sure its not a bad thing! She's been ridden inconsistently so nobody's been checking, and I've only noticed it because she yawned after i rode her... she has them on both sides, but no where else, so i'm sure its not a gum disease... i'm just Anyone know something about this?? Thanks!

Sounds like that's more likely bar damage where the bit sits. Gums are usually a consistent color.

the spots are not near where the bit sits... like i said, they're in the upper portions of the gums, nowhere where the bit should ever be =P Maybe she has this on the roof of her mouth too... i can check if she yawns again... but like i said, i can't imagine the bit causing those spots, she's ridden in a normal snaffle and there is no way it could touch her there, but i'll check again. I'm just baffled by this though, hopefully it's not something bad.
