Dressage Instructors QLD
In a couple of months I will be looking for a very good dressage instructor to work with me and my new hopeful jumper.
I am on the sunshine coast so someone around that area would be great and we are able to travel if need be.
If you have any recommendations, please post :)
Haha well after my brilliant lessons on the weekend, I would suggest Tor Van Den Berge, though he is based just out of Brissy so might be a bit of a hike for you?
I have heard good things about Tor but it's about a 3hr drive for us to get to brissy although we do visit family there fairly regularly.. towing the horse there though for a lesson would be unrealistic unfortunately.
Just get me an airline ticket and I'll work with you.
Fabulous, I'll get onto that right now ;)
If you do ever get a chance for a lesson with Tor though, take it. He's an awesome instructor and a really nice guy. I think a three hour drive for him would be totally worth it - I'm jealous that you live that close!
I love Geraldine Van Montfrans-Eady, Liz Gatti, Ron Patterson and Ruth Jefferies (who does eventing, dressage, show jumping). I'm not sure of their exact locations, but I know they all come from South East Qld somewhere.
I was supposed to go to Tor's for a veiwing to buy a Warmblood, but it seemed he never followed through. I have heard very good things about him, but am told his "very" much the german way of training. Which depends i suppose on your veiw of how far to push a horse. But i judge a person on face value and dont go off by what people "say"
But for a dressage instructor i would reccomend Stefanie Bryant, she is amazing! Her way of explaining in such detail is wonderful! But she is on the GC. Ive also herd Nicole Tough is good, But i dont know anyone on the sunshine coast sorry..
JackofDiamonds, I just had two consecutive lessons with him and he was absolutely brilliant. My horse is EXTREMELY sensitive and easily offended, and Tor was the first coach I've been to that could actually get through to him without getting him panicked, and truly have him working. He invited me to come and ride with him in QLD at the end of the lessons, which I may just take him up on. I was hugely impressed by him, his training methods, his explanation of the work and of his ability to ride anything you throw at him.
Thats wonderful! I have heard many great reveiws on him! I may have to go for a lesson with him and see how it goes. I must admit i did get put off with being told his very german in his training. But by what you describe he doesnt sound that pushy and understand when enough is enough. We'll have to see, i might just organise a lesson, but will have to wait for a new float!
As the germans train its just another horse and if that one doesnt work you can throw it away and replace it, and I understand a horse must be pushed but i dont agree with grinding my spur on there side until it breaks skin and there is blood for "sensitivity".
Well funny you mention it, he was actually talking about the German's and how they train and are able to go through horse after horse. He said over here it's very different, once you've brought a horse you HAVE to succeed with it or you'll be out of pocket and most of us can't afford to go and buy another one because the first doesn't work out.
If he was super pushy and 'beat the horse up' like a lot of the European trainers do, I guarantee Bob would have put him in hospital. He doesn't cope with being beaten up at all. Tor was great with him, very gradual with the work, and though he DID use his spur, Bob is a bit of a ******* to get off the leg so he use the spur to annoy him until he gave to it then he was left alone. Certainly no blood or broken skin - if Bob thought it was too tough there's no way he would have stood for it ;)
I'll definitely be going back to him, and as you know I'm a real stickler for correct but gentle and fair work in horses, so certainly wouldn't be going to him if I thought he was too rough :)
