wormimg: is this something normal? or is Sonny just weird?
Today Sonny was due for worming (well actually he was due tuesday, but the vet said to wait till Sunday to worm him) and I put him in the arena to give him the deworming medicine and to apply his medicine to his cuts.

I went to his left side to apply it in the left corner of his mouth...but he kept pulling his head up, and backing up...he would NOT let me put the tube in his mouth on that side. So I tried his right side and he let me....I had no problems at all putting the tube in his mouth and worming him.

Is it usually normal for a horse to be easier to worm on one side than another? Or is Sonny one of those "special" horses haha

Nope, it's not uncommon ;) Horses have to be taught things on both sides. So if he's only ever been dewormed from one side then he may very well resist on the other side.

I give my horse a squirt of apple sauce for a few weeks before I worm him and then I do it for about another week afterwards, that way he doesn't have any hard feelings for next month. I alternate sides each day.

They need to make wormer taste better so the horse isn't expecting goop! I wormed my horse today. I always worm from the right and never thought about that! But it would make sense. The same with leading a horse, there are a lot that don't like to be led from the left, because they never have been.

Ah, Lexi isn't too fond of it either. ;) That's normal!

Well, I've.. uh.. accidentally tasted it when he spit it out on me. It's gross. I spit it out too.

He is just used to having it on one side and not the other by the sound of it lol!!

Dumas'_Grrrl 05-12-2008 08:50 AM

Just be happy he is willing to take it at all! 8) We have to use a "sneak attack" approach ... ususally we just do the on-feed wormer. its easier.

Vidaloco 05-12-2008 09:13 AM

As Dumas said just be glad he takes it from any side  All ours take it like ladys except Vida. I have to use a worming bit on her, or risk getting a broken nose from her head thrashing.
