Join up but no round pen
This summer I intend to do join up with either COco or X factor... or both. There used to be a tiny metal round pen in the corner of the large indoor arena, but they took it off recently. :-|
So I read up on how to do join up without a round pen, and it was suggested that you cut off a part of the arena with jumps so it's a square or an octagon. However I don't think I will be able to do that because most of the jumps are stored somewhere else.
So I was wondering if it would work, if I lunged first, and then took off the lunge line and continued to chase the horse's hind end. Do you think the horse would go in a circle around me? The arena is very large: 240' x 120', but in the middle-ish there is the large wooden mounting block, some poles and standards. It sort of makes 2 separate work places, but one of the sides is a bit smaller so I was thinkign of doing it there.
Suggestions, ideas?? :-| I really don't think I can find anything that is safe to block off an area.
I did Join-Up (successfully) with my horse loose in a 20 x 40m indoor arena... the extra space just means you have to walk further, rather than standing in the middle of a round pen!
Hmm, could work then. :) According to my calculator, the arena would be in meters: 36-37 X 73.
So if that space is cut in half or a little less, 37 X 35 let's say... hmm...
I would just be scared for the horse to run off to the other side of the arena instead of staying in the first half.
What should I do if that happens? Continue running around and chasing until either the horse joins up?... unless I die of asthma before lol.
I'm going to try this exercise this week on the horse I lease. I would just try it in an indoor because that's what I'm gonna do. It'll involve more moving and your horse might have time to slow down at one end while you jog your way to that end but still I think you'll be alright :-)
Ok, thank you. :) Tell me how it goes for you though! I'd love to know how it worked out.
