average size for a yearling Rocky Mountain
I'm kind of new to the horse business. I just purchased a year old rocky mountain stud coat. He is out of the chocolate venture line. He just turned one this June. right now he is 55.5 inches tall. How much more will he grow?
That's not a bad size for a yearling, how tall were his parents? In my experience most Rockys top out between 14.2-15.2hh. My gelding was pretty close to that height at a year old, now he is 15.1. Have you tried the string test?
What is the string test?
His father is Home Grown and is 14.3, but to my best collection the rest of his pedigree are over 15 hands. His birth mother Royal Flush is 15.1
take a tape measure and measure from the top of the hoof to the middle of the knee
15"= 15 hands
thats usually pretty accurate, although 55" goes to 13.3 hands thats not bad size for a yearling at all imo, if you arnt in any hurry I wouldnt cut him and feed him a good feed, food and health determines a lot on how a horse will grow and develop
I done the string test on him last night and he measured 15 and a quarter. I sure hope he is over 15 hands as i am over 6ft tall. I don't plan on cutting him unless I have too. Thanks for your expertise
When you guys say "cutting" I assume you mean gelding? Because gelding, if anything, makes them grow taller. It is testosterone that signals the closing of the growth plates (or so I am told).
I have a 1/2 Foxtrotter, 1/2 QH gelding who is almost 11 months old and currently 14 hands. My vet acts like he will make 16 hands or better because he has always been a big colt. (String test puts him at 16.1) I gelded mine at 5 months and it certainly hasn't stunted him.
Here is my boy....just because I love to show him off. :lol:
