New horse, starting from scratch (almost), what are the essentials?
I'm sorry if this is in the wrong place, but I wasn't sure where to post so I'll start here! I'm going from no horses (have owned previously) and always doing full care board to a new horse and self-care only. I'm a little rusty and have to admit, I was a bit spoiled with full care and I guess I didn't fully realize all that gets done in a day, but I'm excited to spend more time with my mare and be the one to really care for her, and not just ride. I still have my saddle and pad, but as far as all the other little things I just forget what the essentials are. What else do y'all recommend that's needed for self care, also? Just the basics for now. I know the barn has water buckets available and hay feeders, but I think that's it. Thanks!
There is SO much that could be answered here, from daily feeding ratios and nutritional requirements, to picking a farrier and keeping a regular hoof care regimen, keeping a worming schedule and rotating wormers, making sure that your old saddle fits the new horse properly, keeping a horse first aid kit as well as meds and wraps and bandages for everyday cuts and scrapes and etc....
The list goes on and on.... which part would you like help with??
I suggest going to a book store and getting your hands on every horse ownership book you can find. I have been around horses since I was 8 years old and I still have one entire 6x3x2 bookshelf with nothing but horse books!
EVERY horse owner should have "Horse Owners Veterinary Handbook" to start.
I personally love "Horses for Dummies". The 5 books that I suggest (and have loaned out MANY times) are as follows:
1. Getting Your First Horse - Judith Dutson
2. Safe Horse Safe Rider - Jessie Haas
3. Horse Sense - John J. Mettler Jr. DMV
4. Horse Handling and Grooming - Cherry Hill
5. Happy Horsemanship - Dorothy Henderson Pinch
Good luck and Welcome back to the horse world!!!!
Great, thank you! Just ordered a few of those books :-) She'll be getting here in October so I have some time to read and de-rust myself!
