Wound wrapping

Earlier today, I suppose something spooked my mare and she went to flee and ran into the barbed wire. (Dad won't put up anything else.) I got her to walk up to the barn and put her in her stall, she was in obvious pain. She has multiple cuts through out her legs and chest area. Though one leg is swollen, having two cuts on it on either side. I had to wait for my dad to come and take a look at her, he said "No, she will be fine". So I can't get the vet out, but I have no plan of leaving it open like it is. I've looked up dressing a wound on the leg, you need a non-stick piece to put on the wound, then a cotton wrap to wrap and then the leg wrapping. Question is, she has a cut below her ankle joint, and one above... how can I dress that?

I know, please don't scold that she needs to go the vet, I haven't the money to pay for the vet and farm call. So I have to go with what my parents say, but I have money to get wound dressings..

I'm sorry but this is one where you need some hands on advice, or at least some pics so we can see how bad it is.

Dad could be right, if they are not to bad you may not need the vet, and actually they may be better not being wrapped.

Cold hosing is good at this stage, it will help with cleaning out the wounds and reduce swelling. Non stick bandages, disposable diapers or sanitary towels make good wound covers if they need to be wrapped.

Can you at least phone the vet and talk to them?? Mine is very good with free advice over the phone, and sometimes I can just go and pick up what I need to deal with things.

It is scary hearing that you can't afford the vet though, expect to get jumped on lots:twisted:

I don't know much about dressing wounds but I just wanted to say that I am so sorry that you are having to deal with this. I had a horse get caught up in barbed wire one time and it was horrible. I know how bad it can be. I hope you are able to give her the treatment she needs. You will be in my thoughts.
