Does anyone have some good exercises I could try with my new lease mare? She came as a backyard animal but I thought she was worked out of that. I know her previous leaser had heaps of trust from her but I can't seem to get the same. I'd like for her to trust that I'm only going to do good for her, so if anyone has any tips that'd be great ! :)

I'm subscribing to this. My new guy was a Western horse that had been popped in the face a few times and is pretty shy in general. He's a jumping PHENOM and i want him to work out with me desperately... even if it takes a couple years to get him comfortable.

Just to start with, trust comes with dominence, you cannot have trust without being dominent. Just to begin with (because im horrible at expaning exersices, i will let everyone else do that) But make sure your attitude is that you are the boss, no exceptions, and be very confident! you wouldnt trust a timid person to lead you if you were blindfolded, even though your horse isnt blindfolded, they would trust a timid person either. I have found it depends greatly on your attitude :)

The only problem I have with not being dominent is that because of past istances ( long story ) I'm a little afraid of her, just the way she's unpredictable. I guess ill have to get over that :P

In my experience, trust comes only with time. Every time you handle or ride your horse and it realizes that you've kept it safe, you gain trust. After time, a horse that trusts you will do almost anything for you.

I agree, Trust comes with time!

Yeah you can do 'Clint' techniques or even ones from here but in the end it really does come down to time!

You get her trust the split second you exhibit dominance over her in your 2 horse herd, you being the higher ranked member. Any of the many ground work exercises out there will help you gain her respect. Just make sure you understand the exercises before you start. You don't want to get into a stickly spot and not know what to do next.
