Horse that will not gain weight Hello, I am new to this site. My horse I had for about 3 months has lost weight and won''t gain it back. He has yellowish eyes and little yellow in his gums. Some days they look better and other do not. The vet did a check on him and he does not have a liver problem. He is still doing the normal stuff eating, pooping, peeing, no abnormal vital signs. I was wondering why he still has that yellow? I wonder if there is something that is causing him to lose weight and not gain. I have givien him mineral blocks, grain with oil in it, plenty of hay and a supplement to help a horse gain weight. Any ideas or suggestions are much appreciated. THANKS!:-) |
We would need exact weight in pounds (or at least measurements...e.g. 1/2 scoop of a 3 qt scoop) in order to determine if its a feeding problem or your vet is a wacko :) ETA: Have you gotten a second opinion on your horses blood panel? Jaundice is serious and almost always indicates a problem with the liver....even if the liver isn't directly causing the problem. |
sounds like jaundice.I would get a 2nd opinion |

He is getting in the past two weeks about 7 pounds of grain (patriot feed) a day and about 1/2 bale a day. I have not had another vet check yet. |
Did the vet draw blood and do a complete blood work up? |
Could be worms, get a worm count done by your vet if bloods came back clear ;) |
