The badass brown.
Lately I have seen the unfortunate phrase uttered more than once: “just a brown”. Both here, and in real life. Just this week I remarked to a lady who is the proud owner of a beautiful TB gelding “Don’t you just love browns?” To which she replied “Oh no, he isn’t just brown, he’s a BAY!" Uh-huh, horse in question is browner than brown itself. If there was a calendar celebrating brown horses this horse would be January.
Well, have I got something to say about the phrase ‘just a brown’! This is a shout out to all the beautiful browns out there and to show everyone why brown is the most badass colour in the whole equine colour spectrum. Next time someone asks “Is my horse a liver/smokey black/bay/dilute, recessive, X-linked, chimeric chocolatȅ tiger-striped, lack of dorsal grulla I want everyone to look and think “Man, I think that could be a brown, that’s so badass!”
So you like the black family of colours huh? Buy a badass brown. Because during the months of January to March you will have your wish.
What’s that? You like dapples? Buy a badass brown. Because during the months of March to May that’s what will be greeting you over the fence.
Who doesn’t like a Mahogany bay? Everyone right? Buy a Badass brown. Because during the months of May to July that’s what will you’ll find in your pasture.
Oh, copper bay is more to your liking? No problem! Buy a badass brown. During the months of July to September, a copper bay you shall have.
Anyone out there partial to a liver chestnut? You know what to do! Buy a badass brown. Don’t be surprised when you arrive to ride your horse in the months of September to November only to find that your copper bay has morphed into a liver chestnut.
Come November, what do you think you will be getting? Why a brown of course, what a ridiculous question. How badass is THAT???
So to anyone that ever utters the words “just a brown” this is what Bobbie and I have to say to you:
Yup, big horsie raspberry. That’s so BADASS!!!
So feel free to add pictures of your badass browns, pseudo blacks, wild smokey phenotypically indecipherable colours or really any colour that you think can rival the badass brown.
Much love, Bobbie and Sarah.
*Individual results may vary according to location, housing and feed regimens. Black colouring will be enhanced when in shaded areas, dappling effect more apparent with appropriate, ahem, grooming and copper bay effect best when developed in direct sunlight for a month or two. Model shown enjoys minimal grooming and maximal outdoors time.
DISCLAIMER: This is not to offend our colour gurus, nor is it to offend anyone who has asked about the colour of their equine partner, just a brown appreciation thread
And, badass browns are really hard to find these days. Rarer than any other color! Just look on the horse ads - how many are there, compared to chestnut and bay and all the other fancy colors?
Lol, thanks for a laugh! I've always thought browns were so pretty.
Ladytrails - Exactly!
Equiniphile - Always happy to provide a giggle
Bahahaha. I love this. Brown is beautiful.

I love browns! I lot, my friend had a brown morgan mare, so beautiful. I have a question. . . so if you look in "my barn" at Dante, in the summer he is bay, brown body, black legs, and black tipped ears. . . .then in the winter his whole coat turns super dark that he looks black from far away, so he not a true bay? or can they change this way. . .I have more pics. . .just curious :)
Thyme, I would say that your guy is one that falls in the "badass brown" category. :-)
This made me laugh! I love badass browns!
YES! This is awesome, I actually got an email today, from this lady, about his ad (becuase he is for sale) and her email was
"You said he is sensitive, so he would be easy to push up a mountain? I need a horse that will take me up the trails fast, and be easily moved forward. Although he is ugly, as long as he works. Call me *******"
yea, this is an actually email I got, well she missed out on an awesome brown horse i say!
(i told her to not email me again, rude!)
I learned learn two new things this week about my horses
A. Rem is not a tri-color paint, he is a bay paint (or brown paint? he doesnt have black tipped ears etc.)
B. Dante is brown not bay
