Buying a horse without jumping training
So i am finally looking at buying a horse and i found this one that i really like and he's close to my house so i'm going to see him soon. i am a hunter jumper and my limit is 3ft. only problem is he isnt jumping trained. he is 14 years old. is it too late to teach him to jump? He will canter over ground poles.
I just want to know if 14 is too late to teach a horse to jump????
Any info will help. thx guys!!!
I feel like if you want to train a horse to jump it would be better that you get a younger one. Even if you train this one, how long would you have with him versus how long with a six year old?
I also think you would be better finding a different horse, although not necessarily younger. There are plenty of horses out there for the hunters or jumpers (and since they are different, should be called different) that would be suitable for your discipline.

ok thx guys. im not sure wat im going to do yet. i just wanted to know if it was possible. :)
No, 14 is not too late to teach a horse to jump. I rode a 14 year old and she was trained to jump, but hadn't jumped in 10 years...she wasn't even ridden in 10 years. But after a year she was jumping 2'6" to 2'9" and winning at local hunter shows. She would even free jump up to 4 feet! She was bred to jump, but she was used as a broodmare. Jumping was in her bloodlines.
how much do you want to spend with the horse training it to jump? how much/ competivley do you want to jump? 14 is not to old at all however you do need to look at the health & fitness side of the horse 14 can now be seen as a prime age for showjumping. i would prefer to get a youngster but its up to you hope i have helped a bit just think about it only you can decide.
Instead of buying a horse and trying to make it fit, why not just buy a horse who can already do the job and has the talent for it?
There are a ton of what-ifs associated with your question.
14 is not too old to teach a horse something new.
Does this horse have any age related physical limitations that would make jumping more difficult?
Is there a reason this horse has not been used for jumping in the past other than its owners just never jumped (a fine reason, just making sure).
no he doesnt have limitations. jumping is my main priority. its wat i love to do.
I say, if you love him or feel a connection, go for it! My horse was a back yard horse ornament, abused and never ridden. I taught him how to jump. I do jumpers with him but we are working on hunters! He is 11.
my friends horse is 16 and came from the same place. They now do hunters and they had to re-train him! they have now jumped 4 ft Good luck!!!
