Re-training horse -Don't want to ruin her
I am re-training a wonderful Paint pony who has not been ridden in a year. I round pen every day and she joins-up wonderful. When riding in the ring she is very responsive to leg, which is great, but she is wiggling all over the ring so I am afraid to over use my leg aids. I feel she is a pinball and my legs are the levers popping her over. My legs are still but I am constantly having to push her over to the outside or inside to keep her straight. She listens but I worry that constantly using one leg or the other is too much.
Where are you looking? A horse will often follow your eyes. When your eyes focus on something at the other end then the rest of your body comes into align. If you watch the ground in front of her then a rider is inclined to collapse a hip and drop a shoulder. This can cause a horse to wobble. Pick something you can ride to and as you near it, change you sight to another distant point. Be careful about looking at the dirt in front of the horse. She may think you are picking out a place to land.
