Bad Leasing Experience - What Should I Look for in the Future?
I just need some reassurance, or something.

So we are no longer leasing the horses. That was in first my decision, because the location was just too far. We gave our months' notice within a month of leaving, and paid on the first of the month.

It became a lot worse then it had to. I had posted an ad looking for a horse in my location BEFORE I had given my months' notice, and the leaser sneakily emailed me in response to the ad although they were not in the specified location, and asked questions to verify it was me. They then pinned my mom for posting the ad (they thought it was her), told her they were terminating the lease immediately because we were looking for another place to lease, and told us we lied about our experience with horses because if we were experienced we'd "know how to put boots on". (Sorry, I've never had a reason to put boots on a horse...) My mom was in tears she was so upset.

In the end we were apologized to but there was too much said and done, I felt like my privacy was violated and we felt too uncomfortable to return.
I feel worried even posting this because the leasers may very well be on this forum and get upset but at this point our business relationship is over. I need to vent here because I don't know if what we did was wrong or if maybe anyone can give any insights...

Terminating the leasing contract turned into a nightmare. I am very disappointed that it ended this way. I really loved those horses, and the atmosphere at the barn. I wish we could've gone and said goodbye.

On a lighter note...

We have another place set up, going to meet the horses this weekend and if it works out we'll be riding there. I'll be paying a little more money but the whole atmosphere was a lot more clean and professional. The owner was also very accomadating to my worries from the last lease and even offered to shoe her barefoot horses if we lease them.

Anyways, just needed to vent and get some feedback on the situation. Also, some ideas for what to look for in a future lease situation would be great. Thanks.

My only thought could lease more then one horse. Anyway the way you explained it, it seems like you are better off.

Seems like A LOT of DRAMA, and a total lack of PROFESSIONALISM.

As long as you paid on time, and adhered to your agreement,
things should have gone smoothly.

The whole thing sounds like really bad behavior on the part of the barn owner/ person leasing you their horse.
It definitely sounds like the right time for you to leave that arrangement behind and move forward.

Sorry it ended badly for you,...,
Good luck at the new place:wink:

Yikes! Sounds like a lot of effort just to call you out on looking for a new lease situation. Some people just love the drama!
