Flexing

Hi. I have been working on my horse to flex for a while now, but he won't hold it. He does it beautifully when I am lunging him in side reigs, but when I am riding he loses it. What can I do?

Well I don't have any really great advice for you now, but I think you might want to take a look at your own riding. If he flexes while being lunged but not while ridden, you may subconsciously be doing something to restrict him. Try having someone else ride him and watch from the side, or take photos and videos of yourself riding to have them critiqued. Remember, the horse reflects what the rider does in the saddle.

I assume by flexing you mean coming "round" with nose on the vertical and stepping well underneath his body. To do this you need to have him in front of your leg, stepping well underneath his body then ask for a half halt (HH). The HH should get him underneath himself more and help slow him down if he tends to speed up with the leg you may have to use.

Perhaps taking some dressage lessons will help - it's easier than trying to explain in words what you should be doing.
